2014 Annual Quarter Peal Report

950 quarter peals were recorded within the Association area in 2014, just two fewer than in 2013. Significant events for which quarter peals were rung included St George's Day and the 70th anniversary of the D Day landings. Many quarter peals were rung in relation to the centenary of the start of World War I including some in memory of individual ringers who died and the usual large number of quarter peals on and around Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. Quarter peals were also rung in memory of ringers who died in 2014 including Fred Asprey, Nicholas Chesson, Dennis Owen, Geoffrey Waters, and the husband of Judy Young, Brian Beech. Among the many birthday quarter peals were some for Lucile Corby's 90th.
Birchington (All Saints) is again the leading tower with 75 quarter peals in 2014. Their band has continued ringing quarter peals in different Doubles methods or variations and has named one or two new variations. Some other bands have also rung Doubles and Minor methods for the first time and named them. Rupert Cheeseman was the leading conductor, calling 70 quarter peals, followed by Mike Little with 66. The Canterbury District had the highest number of quarter peals and the highest average per tower while the Rochester District had a quarter peal rung in each of its ringable towers.
Congratulations to the 31 ringers who rang their first quarter peal (34 in 2013); these included four at Benenden. Congratulations also to the five firsts as conductor.
Rupert Cheeseman rang his 1,000th quarter peal. David Manger rang his 2,000th - is he the first Kent ringer to achieve this?
There were 137 conductors in 2014 (130 in 2013). Five handbell quarter peals were rung (13 in 2013) and one quarter peal on the Trafford Ring at Tunstall.
Longer lengths rung were one half peal, one 2160, two 2014 date touches, and four other date touches commemorating events in earlier years.
