2017 Annual Quarter Peal Report

1,196 quarter peals were recorded within the Association area in 2017, exceeding 2016's record year by over 100. Again many quarter peals were rung for the Bellringers Strike Back Against Blood Cancer campaign. Royal occasions marked with quarter peals included the 65th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne and the 70th wedding anniversary of HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip. Quarter peals were rung in memory of and in celebration of the lives of several Association members who died during the year, including Freda Cannon, Michael Marshall, Ray Morgan and Jim Phillips. There were again many quarter peals rung to mark the centenaries of the death of ringers and other individuals in World War I. The 350th anniversary of the Battle of Medway was marked by quarter peals in the Rochester District.
A quarter peal of Triples was achieved at Farnborough by including the bourdon bell, and a quarter peal was rung on the Charmborough ring at Tonbridge Castle. It is encouraging to see bands of Kent Young Ringers ringing quarter peals.
For the seventh consecutive year Birchington (All Saints) was the leading tower (78 quarter peals in 2017). Neil Jones was again the leading conductor, calling 113 quarter peals. The Canterbury District had the highest number of quarter peals, the Tonbridge District had the highest average per tower and the Rochester District had the highest percentage of its ringable towers recording a quarter peal.
Congratulations to the 30 ringers who rang their first quarter peal (32 in 2016), and to the nine firsts as conductor.
Michael Birkbeck rang his 2,000th quarter peal, Jacqueline Barlow rang her 1,000th and Hugo Tracey rang his 500th.
There were 162 conductors in 2017 (151 in 2016). Five handbell quarter peals were rung (4 in 2016).
Two 2017 date touches were rung.
Several methods and variations were rung to a quarter peal for the first time and named by the band.
